This is the Venus hut on the Karamea River, deep in the heart of Kahurangi National Park. This is one of the few great wilderness walks left in New Zealand.
100 kilometres in length - it is tracked, but rough in places. A fantastic walk for those with hiking experience. An obstacle course in places.
Very few (if any) other hikers ever encountered on this hike.

  • Hi janspil. I know the feeling, re the rain on the Leslie/Karamea. Awesome walk, but it does have to be treated with the utmost care and respect!

It hasn't got any easier to hike. We're very pleased this track hasn't been upgraded, but has remained a wilderness walk.

    Best wishes

    Kahurangi Woman :)

  • Did this hike two times (in 1988 (?) en 1993 (?)). Got stuck at Christmas in Venus-hut both times for 2 days due to extreme heavy rainfall. Nice memories though. Wish I was 20 year younger, and could still hike tramps like this on.
