This IS NOT a guide to playing Ryu. If you want a Ryu guide, watch Air's Crosscounter guide, it is excellent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcMVI-7cn04
This is the preface to a multi-part series in which I show you how to play against the player that you are up against rather than play against "what my opponent SHOULD be doing". In the following parts I will have match videos of me using Ryu and show you what to do in real situations.
Thiis video is just an introduction and shows you the basic tools I will be using in the following segments. This video is not very useful by itself, so please make sure you watch the rest of the series.
I opted to just do a voice-over rather than text like in my other videos because I want to be able to talk more free-form and not have to condense the information so tightly into a few sentences.
Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TwbOoixB7c
That you mentioned in the end, happens a lot to me. Guys doing a blockstring then jump over for a cross up. Sometimes I can react with a air to air if they get predictable but most of the times not because I'm worried about a tick throw so when they jump I'm already too late : \

@jamest1080 Honestly I don't think you'll be able to get into FG's in general, I wouldn't waste the money. The game is balanced well but it's just balanced in a way most people won't like. For instance a lot of characters are really good but if you want to use your special flower character then you have an uphill battle. With that said, unless you're really good already balance won't even affect you because your losses will be entirely your fault and not related to balance.
