Phantasmagoria: for Horn Octet by Jason Ausban

Phantasmagoria is a French Horn octet composed in the style of Hollywood horns. Phantasmagoria derives from the 19th century french phantasmagoria shows in which modified lanterns, as well as smoke and screens, were used to create the illusion of ghost-like apparitions. This pre-cinema concept inspired me to compose a piece based on the fantastic imagery of these phantoms, and what better way to exemplify this than through horns. The lush and ravishing horn lines of great movie scores is what made me originally so enamored with the horn.
