Hovering Balloon

Early morning in cottage in northern Wisconsin. I couldn't believe how eerie this was ...walking across the room at about 6 a.m. I noticed this thing out of the corner of my eye. It was Iris's balloon--a balloon my niece had left behind after returning to NH the day before with my sister and her family. It was perfectly still. The balloon was floating, independently. A beautiful, amazing sight.

In this case the fluid is air. The helium inside of the balloon is initially less dense than the air, so the buoyant force on it is more than its weight, causing it to rise. Helium diffuses out of the side of the balloon, as everyone knows. As the helium diffuses, the volume shrinks, and it gains density. Once the baloon has the same density as air, it will neither sink nor float.
