Copernicus was born in Poland. His father's name was Niklas KOPPERNIGK and his mother Barbara Watzenrode. Both parents come from the German citizenship of the Hanseatic city of Thorn, who had assumed the King of Poland. The brother of the mother, Bishop Lucas Watzenrode, also in German, provided for the training of Copernicus. While studying in Bologna, he entered his name as a student in German nations. He spoke German, Polish, Latin.
