Let's get ready for a rocket ride. Wondrous time- piece record for the ages. Was it just a 50's record made too late in 1963. Probably the kids on Bandstand would say it was too hard to dance to. None the less, this record is an incredible blast off into outer space with Johnny Greco backed up by the Five Epics. Hang on as Johnny take-e take-e take-e you on a rocket ride.

  • Man, you have some terrific records here--lots of stuff that I wish our oldies stations would play for some more variety. I noticed that you even have some David Box singles! I enjoy your channel Allycool; keep up the great work!

  • @galoon thank you for your kind comments. Sometimes I just get lucky and get hold of good and rare oldies. Sorry, I didn't see your comment until now.

  • Johnny Greco...a good friend of mine around 1970 when he was in a band called The Hot Ice. Back in 1963 we would do the stomp to this record, so it was perfect to dance to, and actually the kids on Bandstand would have loved it.

  • Fun, the stomp, west coast kids did the surfer's stomp. Lots of good changes in this record for creative dancing. Thank you for sharing your friendship with Johnny.

  • West coast pressing (you can tell from the fonts used on the label)... Weird. I've never seen one of those before. Ally, does the dead wax say Reco Art? I'm wondering if they used the original stampers or not

  • Hey PJ, guess you're glad I know what dead wax is. The print is minute:

    Mastering

    Reca Art Phila

    P-C 0 2- A

This is a promo and on the label is stamped: gratefully Gil Bogos

So, PJ, what does all this mean?

Yes, I came across this record a couple of years ago here in California.

    Thanks for asking,

    Ally

  • @allycool62 - Sorry it took me so long to reply. I just came across this today. The label stamp is most likely from a distributor that was pushing the record. I have a few promos with thank you's on them.

The "Mastering Record Art Phila" means that they used Philly stampers. Monarch had a mastering lab.. I'm surprised they didn't request to have a safety dub sent to them so they could make their own mastering plates.

Very interesting and rare variation of this great record!

  • I love the oldies even though I was born then. I was wondering if you know when this song was recorded?

  • @soulmandan Wow! I had no idea my dad sang backup too. (Franklin Peaker Jr of the Original Blue Notes)

  • Perhaps the music changing in 1963 - brought an end to Doo-Wop melodies...This was released in 1963, & didn't do too well. Neither did the Doo Wop "The Lone Teen Ranger" song in June of 1963, by Jerry Landis (Paul Simon)...Dylan, Peter, Paul, & Mary & the surf sound were hip...But Doo Wop still is in a class of its own for the '50s songs.

  • Great mover and yes the Geater use to play it a lot in Philly

  • high tenor courtesy of the late great franklyn peaker of bluenotes fame.........
