One of Scott Joplin's non-ragtime pieces, this one is decidely classical in style, I think.

  • Fantastic! One of my absolute favorite Joplin songs.

  • @historyman4773

I'm glad you enjoyed it! :-)

  • Thank you - very emotional. Do you know the story behind his writing this one?

I'm glad you enjoyed it; I wish this piece would get more views, but ah well!

I don't know the story behind this piece, though I recall someone telling me that 'Bethena Waltz' waltz was written soon after the death of Joplin's wife. Certainly this piece seems much more cheeful & hopefully has a more happy story behind it.

  • by far the best binks waltz interpretation on youtube. If i had any criticism it would be to get better recording equipment!! anyways great job.

  • You're very kind! This video hasn't gotten a lot of views, which is kind of sad as it's a charming piece of music.

  • @tripleshakequeen actually, if you come to Sedalia MO in June, I'm presenting a symposium that discusses the backstory on this piece

  • You are very welcome! :) I feel the same way about this piece (and Ragtime generally); a lot of people just race through the pieces, and a lot of the beauty is lost, and I do like to vary the tempo a little too throughout the pieces, to match the changing moods, as sometimes there are some marked contrasts between one section and another.

  • I totally agree that it is very classical in nature. Excellent interpretation. Too often people rush through Bink's Waltz like it was a race to the finish a chariot race and I hate that. It is a melancholy piece that was designed to be played with feeling, meaning that there is no consistent tempo throughout the song, but overall should drag just a little. You played it well, just like I usually play it. Thank you for the listening pleasure.

  • It is lovely piece, and emotional depth is one of Scott Joplin's strong points, I think. Glad you enjoyed it! :)
