@USAPatriot0 stupid comment ....; !!! Ahahah
Halberds are part of historic uniforms these guards wear, of course they don't carry them as bodyguards' weapons since they're ceremonial guards , but if a guy comes into US Senate in Washington with a gun, even more honor guards would eventually shot before he got silenced .....;-)) !

Do the Italian/French speaking Swiss have to learn German to join?

@Lagerfeld2008 Why are the bundeswehr more serious than these guys? & also "I dislike Italy" is a pretty stupid comment to make, firstly your view on Italy is racist probably unfounded & secondly the SWISS Guard don't have anything to do with Italy as Vatican City is totally separate, it may be within Italy but its a totally different (and independent) country.

And they have to be Swiss too! - just recently, an Indian Catholic man became a Swiss guard becos he was adopted by Swiss parents and raised in Switzerland as a Catholic

I'm athiest and I have mass respect for the pope, and the holy vatican. This has got to be one of the most loyal and honorable groups i've ever seen. Most modern Christians piss me off and are ignorant, they could learn something from this.

Why do they carry halberds? What are they going to do, shop you in half? If a guy comes in with a gun, he will kill most of them before they get to the guy.

A 120'000 CHF (125'000$) per year salary . Nourished and lodged for free.
@njoyboy1 Because that's how it's always been for the last 500 years. It wouldn't make much sense for Protestants, Jews and Buddhists to guard the life of the head of Catholicism. Being Catholic ensures that they'll be loyal.
The pope needs a defense for the same reason the president of the US or any other head of state needs one: because there are people out there who want to kill him.
P.S.: Y ur eengleesh so bad? U no go 2 skool?

The Pope needs defense because he is also a head of state. There might be an assassination like what happened to the late Pope John Paul II in St.Peter's square. Vatican is not racist. Everyone is welcomed in the Vatican regardless of the race, religion, sex or status.
