I had a great opportunity to test-drive a new Hasselbald H4d camera with its huge 50 Megapixel digital back.

Ease of use, camera controls, weight, focus speed and other "external" parameters is not interesting for me, as all of this parameters is highly subjective, both cameras has a big list of fans among professional photographers.

What I was curious to see is an actual difference in the image quality, comparing to my Canon 1Ds Mark III, especially in macro and around macro world: this is most important for me as a product photographer.

Full article with hi-res samples and a conclusion is on a blog, as usual:

  • @angelisone Hm.. why not to shoot woth the cord? It is faster and more reliable.. did not get what youa re saying.. Oh, may be cord is not cool enough? :-)

  • @FlightSimTutorials Well, I am going to replace my 1Ds MKIII with $30K MF camera soon. Canon simply can't give me the quality my clients expect to receive.. (talking about sharpness/details/image resolution).

BTW, it is not about huge postes, but mostly about ability to crop a lot and still get very good resolution image. AD agencies need this.

"I picked this baby up at the swap meet in El Segundo. The guy wanted 25K but when I told him I was a cop and only had 20K cash on me he sold it to me. I never regretted the purchase. It took amazing photos. Unfortunately I don't have it anymore. I ended up trading it straight across for a ..."

  • @helthuismartin Not really. The HUGE difference (why the price is especially different) is the fact that the 5D3 is a 35mm format camera. Not a medium format camera. The rumours for the 5D3 by the way, is that it will be a more improved 5D2 (just with a 22mp sensor instead of a 21.1), but a lot faster. There's rumours of a 5D X with a 45mp sensor however.. but I assume if they make the 45MP sensor.. they'd just make that.

  • @helthuismartin Wont it still have a 35mm sensor though?

  • @TelisRafa Yep it has to do with pixel density, anti aliasing/sharpness. The MF sensor allows better DOF and detail.

  • I would let my employer buy this, and I will take all of the credit for my work. Saves money

  • A Canon 5D2 wil do the job too..What a waste of money.Next summer the 5D3 comes out whit 48MP .It wil blow digital medium format right out off the sky.

  • @TelisRafa all great professional photographers shoot with MF? Listen to what you are saying? Get your head out of your ass man.

  • @AKELstudio or they need to know what they want, so you can photograph what then want without having to crop later.

  • i am sick and tired with all these people which are not able to understand the difference between 35mm and MF or they are just jealous. There is a reason why all great professional photographers shoot with MF cameras and the reason is far more than their "desire" to spend 40-50k on a camera. Firstly an MF camera is an Investment for a pro photographer and secondly is not the camera you are going to upgrade every year due to Nikon-canon marketing.
