WHAT THEY DO
Boatswains (BOSNs) in the Canadian Forces are the seamanship specialists. The range of their activities and supervisory responsibilities is wider than in most other sea occupations. Their duties are to:
# Operate and maintain shipboard equipment associated with cargo handling and intership transfer of personnel, fuel and materiel at sea
# Operate and maintain a ship's anchor and cable equipment for such tasks as towing, the launch and recovery of a ship's boats, and rescue operations
# Operate and navigate small craft in enclosed waters, including a ship's boats, auxiliary vessels and tenders
# Perform tasks associated with a ship's rigging, rope work and lifesaving equipment
# Organize and conduct activities associated with the storage, training and use of small arms, demolitions and ammunition
# Plan, organize and conduct drill and ceremonies such as ceremonial salutes, honour guards and burials at sea
# Assist and supervise deck crews in cleaning, preserving and painting the ship and its equipment
# Operate equipment such as outboard motors, industrial sewing machines, forklifts and cranes on replenishment ships
# Coordinate watch keeping duties at sea and in harbor

  • most of them are in the bosn' trade because they failed IQ tests, and dont let the video fool you. none of what they do couldnt be done by a 8$ a hour lackie..

  • @fistymcbum

The C.F. doesn't choose your field, nor can they transfer you to another one for punishment.

Though they can deploy you wherever your skills are needed.

Everybody in the Canadian military contributes to the main duties:

Serving our country and others around the globe.

Without our "deck swabbers", "cable guys" and "I.T. people", the whole Canadian Navy wouldn't be any use.

  • @redragonfive Really?I think it's one of the best jobs in the Navy..What is your problem?

  • @fistymcbum I guess you can speak for yourself, but I know of many intelligent people who chose the bosn trade because they wanted to, not because they can't do anything else.

  • @fistymcbum I'm a bosn in the Canadian Navy. I'm currently attending university where I get near straight A's. I chose this trade because it seemed the most interesting and fun, and while not all other bosn's are straight A students, I can assure you that the majority aren't idiots either.

  • @BoatsYoda Mind if I ask a bit about it, mate?

  • Canada's First Citizen-In-Right.

    Canadian Forces Commander-In-Right.

Find out why this is so.

  • @TeamGhostX I second your comment! I'm a retired Boatswain's Mate (US Navy) and have the great fortune to teach the Boatswain's Mate course as a civilian. If I can do it all over again, I would take the exact same route. No matter what job you do, it's all about how we all contribute as a team for the mission of the ship.

  • @XRAND3LLX I laughed too.

  • I'm serving in the canadien navy has a boatswain, onboard HMCS Fredericton, and let me tell you I love my job. Yes it's hard but see the result at the end.

  • "rescuing seamen" LOL

  • can you be a officer even if you are a boatswain
