THIS IS A PREVIEW OF THE KCBQ DVD, AVAILABLE LATE 2010:
August 28, 2010 was a warm Saturday afternoon in Santee, CA. At exactly 12:10 (1170, get it?) a stone and bronze monument was dedicated on Mission Gorge Road, near the site where West Coast AM Radio history was made in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Air staffers, engineers, family, friends, and hundreds of fans of San Diego radio station KCBQ AM 1170 shared memorabilia, photos, and touching memories of the 50,000 watt transmitters, towers, offices and personalities that made The Q the showpiece of Top 40 AM music radio from 1958 to 1978. Here's a memory shared by "Shotgun Tom" Kelly in this clip of the fun, frolic, folks, and fantastic sounds of a time long passed, and now honored by the impressive stone and bronze monument near the parking lot of what is today the Kohls/Lowes shopping center.
The monument features pictures of the KCBQ building and the famous six towers. A list of more than 100 staffers that worked there n Santee, and/or at the offices at 7th and Ash Streets in downtown San Diego are honored on the bronze plaque affixed to the stone work.
