(Springfield, IL ) - The Illinois House Adoption Reform Committee on March 13, 2008 approved legislation, 8-1, that enables Illinois adult adoptees to obtain copies of their original birth certificates.
State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) is sponsoring the bill.
Since 1947, original birth certificates of adopted persons have been sealed under Illinois law and available to adult adoptees only in limited circumstances.
Feigenholtz's bill would undue that law.
The legislation now faces the full House.
Thumbs up for the Illinois House Adoption Reform Committee. Now it is time for adoption reform to become federal law.
