Arroyo Grande Sports Complex - Henderson, NV - Armando Acosta hosted a Halloween "Real Skilz" NSA / Miken & Mizuno HR Derby that was put together by the City of Henderson Parks & Rec. The big show of the tournament came from the home run contest Friday night. I have been to many of these events and this was definitely the most entertaining derby I have ever seen. The event was set up to get the two finalists to go against the two manufacturers reps, Denny Crine of Miken and Johnny Bailey of Mizuno. In the end, Chris Adams and Tyson Steele of 301 Sports were the victors, with Adam Elliott receiving the consolation bat (a Mizuno) for taking third. To start the battle between the locals and the reps Tyson ran off 10 home runs with his 8 outs. Johnny Bailey came on next and took a couple of swings to get into a groove but was able to compile a clean 14 home runs before his 8th out. On deck next was Chris Adams, for the home town boys, he got into a groove early and put up a solid 17 additional home runs to run the local boys total to 27. This was a good mark that a lot of us thought might be pretty good. Armando, the Easton rep, and gent here doing the MC duties as well as camera work for UTube, was worried that this would be the first time that his manufacturers reps would get beat. Then Denny Crine stepped to the plate. His first swing was God awful, with a pitch that was thrown nearly straight at his face by Keith Taylor (Skipper of Time 2 Mash). Denny managed to foul the pitch off over the backstop but it was a bad swing. Needless to say, you can probably guess what happened next. Denny put the next 16 in a row over the fence. No wait, not just over the fence, into orbit in some cases. Many of these bombs landed up on the hillside or in a couple of cases up on Arroyo Grande rd. In the middle of all this, Chris Adams made a little bet with Denny that he couldn't double his total ($100 for 34 home runs), and this seemed to bring out Denny's focus even more. When it was all said and done, Denny finished with 33 home runs, one short of the thirty four he needed to collect on the bet with his buddy but enough by far to defeat the local boys 47-27.
