While the recent success of fighters like Alistar Overeem and Gegard Mousasi in the K-1 circles have helped, since the beginning of formal MMA competition, the general consensus has been that the striking of MMA athletes is well-below the par of their contemporaries in professional boxing, kickboxing, and other stand-up fight sports (Except Taekwondo :P) There are many reasons for this, training multiple disciplines sapping time a single sport athlete would use to hone one skill, adjusting to the realities combat a stand-up fighter wouldn't have to deal with (EX- Takedowns) and events like this, where MMA fighters would face stand up fighters in stand up rules, and usually be knocked out violently.
In this case, we have Pancrase stalwart and pro wrestler Minoru Suzuki taking on professional kickboxer and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Maurice Smith...under Muay Thai rules. As one can plainly see, despite using Thai-style kicking since his UWF days, Suzuki's striking is nowhere in the same league as Smith.
someone should've thrown in the towel for him
