  • Thanks for your quick response! We have 3 avocado trees that we want to plant (using your backyard orchard method for year round avocados). But, they are in 5 gallon containers. So would we need to elevate the bed higher to match the depth of the rootball?

  • @cassi4toys You make the raised bed, and fill it with dirt. Then dig a hole to plant the trees.

  • Is this the best way to deal with poor drainage? Could we dig down and till in some sand or compost instead of raising the bed?

Also, what if we wanted to do multiple trees (your backyard orchard method)? Would the raised box still work?

    Thanks!

  • @cassi4toys You don't want to dig a hole and fill it with something, that will just create a bigger mess. The water would just collect in it and kill your tree for sure. You can make a raised bed out of wood or rock, or just mound up dirt and plant in it. Raised beds work great for multi-planted trees.

  • Theres noway i will ever chop the top off my tree maybe trim but dang thats not much left of the tree!!

  • @arkansastrash320 Topping the tree at about knee height is the only way to get a low fruiting canopy. It does not set the tree back, or delay the time it takes to set fruit. Plant two trees, top one and don't touch the other. See which tree is better after a couple years.

  • @cassi4toys probably better to dig down into the soil in the middle of the raised bed if you really wanna have a raised bed

  • Thank you for this video. I must say there should have been a warning label on it. I was almost crying after you cut the tree back/down.I I will have to toughen up to be a gardener. I will be buying my first tree next weekend and found a place here in town that has your tree. I will do it just the way you do. Maybe I should stop off and get a box of Kleenex® too. :)

  • @DaveWilsonTrees Oh i understand the need to prune the tree it just seemed a little harsh.I myself would have been scared to cut mine back that much not having experience in this like you do.Thats all i meant! I know cutting them back spurs new growth like crazy. With my luck if i cut mine back like that it would up and die probably my luck thanks..

  • @swivelgate Not so.
