This was the first DIY internal moving bed filter on Youtube but I have made much better designs since this one. Check out the video titled 'Excellent aquarium moving bed filter at Tyne Valley Aquatics' - That is the best one so far and uses a new type of media (available spring 2012)
** I AM NOW SELLING A NEW MEDIA WITH 40% MORE SURFACE AREA THAN K1 - CHECK LINK BELOW **
http://tynevalleyaquatics.co.uk 01661 844 005 Home made filter. I used a pond treatment bottle with holes drilled in and put K1 in to act as media. It fits over existing uplift pipe perfectly and adds an extra biological side to the tank filtration. Ammonia and nitrite always reads zero. This filter could do with some more media in. To buy the media used in this filter (I ship Worldwide), click here: http://www.tynevalleyaquatics.co.uk/#/fishkeeping-products/4546755825

  • what else can i use besides k1? would legos work? or any suggestions of items such as that

  • The best I've found so far is 'hel-x' - follow link in video description.

  • hi, is the flow to strong? Isn it`? But it looks nice!

  • This was the first aquarium moving bed filter I made so its no way the best. Later ones have much more media and a less frantic action.

  • I have a co2 reactor in my 55 gallon and was wondering if I could incorporate this idea into it to make one device. Would the CO2 be harmful to the bacteria? I know that O2 is good for it.

  • CO2 would be no good to drive this filter as you need good air flow. CO2 units only produce a small amount of bubbles. The bacteria rely on an oxygen rich environment to thrive so CO2 would most likely kill them off if used to drive a moving bed filter.
