Steve Williams was 3 months into an 18 month volunteer placement in Samoa when the tsunami devastated the island on 30 September 2009. Steve is a retired paramedic and his volunteer placement involved training the Samoan Fire Emergency Service Authority in advanced first aid. While only 3 months into the training, the skills Steve had transferred to his team became immediately useful when the tsunami struck. Steve was volunteering through the Australian Government funded program Volunteering for International Development from Australia (VIDA). Originally from Melbourne, Steve has over 30 years of experience as a paramedic, most recently with the Royal Ambulance of Victoria.
