To most people, I-9 compliance begins and ends with checking the right to work status of new hires and filling out the required paperwork. It's such a standard process, that we take it for granted and don't think twice about what true compliance really means.

Unfortunately what you don't know, CAN hurt you and your company.

The fact is, comprehensive compliance goes beyond new hires. It also includes your EXISTING employees and in some cases, even your vendors and subcontractors. Overlook any one of these groups, and you open yourself to substantial risk.
How bad can it be? Let's just say that the day ICE or the department of labor knocks on your front door is not the day you want to discover you're not fully I-9 compliant.

Fines for noncompliance can reach into the thousands of dollars for each employee...and that can be for simple mistakes like missing information or forgotten signatures. Multiply that figure by the number of employees in your workforce and you begin to see the magnitude of problem...but it is only the tip of the iceberg!

Where the real damage is done is the time and effort (not to mention legal costs) you'll spend defending yourself against a federal investigation and possible criminal charges. Running into compliance problems can quickly and easily sink your bottom line, or worse, your business.

Unfortunately, the government doesn't make things easy for you. With a constantly changing maze of complex regulations, requirements, forms and processes, trying to follow the law can make your head spin and quickly become a full time job. The government tried to make things easier by introducing an employment verification system called E-Verify, but even this requires additional time with ongoing training and testing.
Some companies like ADP® and others promise to help by connecting you with E-Verify, but don't be fooled. They only offer half-measures, covering new hires while leaving the rest of your workforce open to risk.
