This is a story from Navy/Marine Corps News that I did as a Navy Journalist (JO2) working for N/MCN in February 1995 on then Col. Charles Bolden.

Col. Bolden had been an astronaut with NASA and did the interview because he had become the Deputy Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy, thus a great reason for us to interview him.

You can read more at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_F._Bolden,_Jr.

He had a fantastic story to tell and (as you can see) got pretty emotional recalling one of his missions when he first saw the continent of Africa from space as one of the first African-American astronauts. Of course he didn't point out or actually talk directly about the connection of being African-American, an astronaut, and making it as far as being in space and seeing the continent of Africa, but the emotion is there.

Now, he has been selected by the Obama administration to head NASA, and the first African American to head the agency on a permanent basis.

Hats off to Charles Bolden, one of my best interviews with Navy/Marine Corps News and one of the best and most inspirational individuals I've met!

I am proud to have been able to interview him and that he has truly reached for the stars! This guy definately has the Right Stuff!!!

  • Is there a time that he speaks that he doesn't get choked up? Very emotional guy.

  • @majormajor42 he was emotional at that specific part. We interviewed him during Black History Month, he had been visiting schools and talking about Black History. While he spoke about his thoughts about being in space and being a U.S. astronaut and seeing the continent of Africa from space he got a little emotional as one of the first African Americans to be an astronaut. I would hope everyone sees the significance and why he got a little emotional recalling the moment.
