The three-pronged rushing attack of the South Shore Vocational football team of Hanover trampled the helpless Franklin County Tech, 37-0, for the Vikings' second State Vocational Small School Championship in four years. Running backs Michael Tripp and Frank Mogavero teamed with senior quarterback Jayson Sullivan in South Shore's wishbone scheme to total 257 yards rushing and four touchdowns on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy.
``It's hard to imagine a much better game than this,'' Vikings head coach Derek Mariani said. ``A coach always looks for things to improve on. We had a few too many penalties and struggled on two-point conversions, but everything else was perfect. They played so well tonight.''
The Eagles, however, failed to live up to the top billing given to their rushing game as senior running back Cody Pease (1,420 rushing yards going into the game) was kept silent. Unable to run the ball on South Shore's formidable duo of defensive tackles Mogavero and Rick Dares, Franklin County resorted to an inexperienced passing game that proved to be ineffective. Quarterback Jeremy Roberts threw four interceptions and his receivers accounted for drop after drop. ``I wasn't that surprised to see them (passing the ball more) because I think they knew there was no way that they were going to be able to come up on (Dares and Mogavero),'' Mariani said. ``If you've watched those two over the last few games, they have totally dominated the middle of the line. (Franklin) trying to pass the ball more made sense.''
In his final appearance in a Vikings uniform, second-year starting quarterback Jayson Sullivan was nearly flawless. He broke off runs of 48 and 53 yards, totaling 104 yards on the ground. The senior captain also threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to his brother John on a fake punt and did not turn the ball over. ``We just stuffed them on defense all game and made some huge plays on offense,'' Jayson Sullivan said. ``None of this was possible without the coaches and the seniors. They worked hard all season and all four years here, and it's been a pleasure playing with them.''
Much of the credit must go to South Shore's defense. Austin Lindsay, Jake Simpson, John Sullivan and Eric Austin each picked off a pass. ``We're one of the smallest Voke schools around, but we play in the Mayflower League Large,'' Mariani said. ``I think that is a real competitive league right now, and we take on very good non-league opponents, too. The kids work hard all season, and it's great to see them get recognition tonight.''
