Of course the correct way to do this is to make an adjustment layer, but I guess this is part of the, photoshop for retards series.

Seriously, there are many ways to do things. Talking about adjustment layers adds another level of complexity to this task that a newbie doesn't need. Adding an adjustment layer is a great way to accomplish this, but for a newbie who just wants to fix up a photo, an adjustment layer is no more correct than any other method that achieves the same result.
