Mac OS 8 Copland introduces preemptive multitasking to make efficient use of the CPU by keeping it as busy as possible. Users can have multiple tasks running concurrently such as copying a large file while launching an application and emptying the Trash.
A lesser version of this technology was introduced in the Mac OS 8.0 Finder. Genuine preemptive multitasking was finally available to Macintosh users with Mac OS X 10.0.
