State officials dumped 11,000 aquatic lawn mowers into the North New River Canal as part of a regional effort to keep South Florida's drainage system flowing. The farm-raised grass carp devour hydrilla — fast-spreading aquatic plants that aren't native to Florida and threaten to clog the vast system of canals that protect South Florida from flooding. About 59,000 grass carp will be helping clear hydrilla from canals. By Andy Reid, Sun Sentinel, 12/2011
