Gunnar Goes God

The quest for truth in the experience of God vs. the experience of middleclass boredom

The Norwegian family man Gunnar feels that despite having everything he needs in his hectic middleclass life, something is missing. He understands that he longs for silence and spirituality. After dissecting his life and the way Scandinavians organizes their lives, Gunnar decides to travel to the world's first Christian monastery in Egypt to find tranquility and perhaps even the truth.

In the monastery, Gunnar takes part in the everyday life of the monks, taking in their perspectives on reality, solitude and death. Their way of life is based on silence, prayers and meditation. Could it be that in this simple philosophy there are qualities that the Scandinavians have lost? Does the atheist Gunnar actually long for a piece of this? If yes: Is it possible to bring parts of this back from the monastery and into our modern lives?
