Medical massage in cases of Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders

As a result of a tremendous exposure to stress, the development of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders has reached pandemic proportions.

TMJ sufferers experience high-intensity headaches, difficulty with chewing, painful joint clicking and popping, and other symptoms. With the progression of the pathology, individuals may even develop sleep disorders.

TMJ Anatomy: The TMJ is formed by the temporal and mandibular bones. Attached to the mandibular condyle is a fibrocartilage meniscus or articular disk, which allows the mandible to move smoothly. The masticatory muscles (temporalis, masseter, lateral pterygoid, and medial pterygoid) are responsible for movement and stabilization of the TMJ.

Bruxism: Due to stress, people often develop bruxism. Bruxism is a pathological clenching and grinding of teeth that usually occurs during sleep. Bruxism is caused by the hyperactive contraction of the masticatory muscles. Imagine any other muscles in our support and movement system kept under tight contraction for seven hours. Pathological hypertonus in these muscles will be formed, followed by restriction of range of motion, trigger point development, and other symptoms. With time, hypertonic condition in the masticatory muscles leads to the development of osteoarthritis in the TMJ, including negative effects on the articular meniscus. In such a case, the above-mentioned TMJ pathology starts producing severe headaches and painful "clicks."

Massage therapy and Post-Isometric Relaxation Techniques for TMJ Disorders: Massage therapy should be focused toward the reduction of tension in the masticatory muscles, releasing tension in fascia, and elimination of trigger points. Post-isometric relaxation is an extremely important tool for the restoration of the range of motion. Massage therapy steps for TMJ:

  • dentists don't want to admit when they give us TMJ and destroy our lives.

  • Hey

    I have this problem too. When i open my mouth the right side of the jaw has a click/pop sound. Although there is no pain. But its a bit uncomfortable while eating food. I had this from about 2years now. At the start, i visited the doctor, who asked me not worry if there is no severe pain. But sometimes it really worries me as i live alone these days. What can i do. Everytime i open my mouth to eat or talk, it clicks. =(

  • and personally i think that dentists DO fuck ur jaw up.. i went to the dentist sooo many times and remember me havin to open my mouth for sooo long that it HUR|T... How many people with TMJ problems have been to the dentist numerous times and THEN suffered some TMJ problems?? HMM!?!

  • I'm 22 and I used be REALLY BAD guys... my jaw wouldnt just CLICK.,.. it would get STUCK :-0 stuck sideways :'( i had this problem for about a couple of years and it got so bad that it started to become very painful.. WEIRDLY I'm fine now.. not even a click. NOTHING.. it just healed! I forgot about it! I just wanted to come onto a tmj video to tell people to STOP grindin teeth whilst sleeping, eat soft foods etc and giv ur jaw TIME to heal.. SLowly it will get better.

  • @deathclaw492 Same with me. Click/pop sound right jaw, didn´t hurt for years until last week :-) Same with the joints at knee, many years of sound, doctors said "don´t worry, eso es normal", than many years later, started the pain, too...

    @Todesnotiz

    It looks to me, that if you would have received massage on the entire TMJ area, most likely you wouldn't suffer from this pain. I mean… keeping open mouth for a long time isn't such a physical load so muscles would be strained. But it would be the case, if these muscles’ resting tone significantly increased/strained. In such a case it would amount to injury. It would be good, if dentists' would consider this preventive measures.

    Get well fast,

    Boris

    @Todesnotiz

    Stress management massage has to be applied constantly, on weekly basis. I believe that before dental treatment, you’ve accumulated a lot of tension in masticatory muscles, which was the precondition for your symptoms and keeping your mouth open for long time caused additional significant strain to it, which resulted in level 10 pain.

    ...to be continued...

  • @Todesnotiz I am very happy to hear that your pain reduced significantly. It is evident that treatment is working for you. Please do not expect that from one or two treatments you'll get read of all your symptoms. Usually, it takes around 15 treatments. Also please do not forget that we all constantly exposed to stress, and accumulation of muscular tensions, including tension in masticatory muscles, must be managed constantly.

    To be continued...

  • I want to try one of these massages. Where is your clinic located?
