Released in 2009 on Stones Throw.

James Pants is a multi instrumentalist from Spokane, WA. His first album was in 2008. This is his 2nd.

So, I guess James Pants wants to start a cult and this album is supposed to be the soundtrack. Sounds cool to me. Sounds like a crazy idea that would be coupled with some crazy album.

Well, what we get here is some of Pants synth / drum machine heavy brand of silly electro / R&B. The songwriting is a little more complex, a lot darker, but by no means more serious. James is still as goofy as ever. It also seems he's been listening to a lot of Joy Division.

Maybe this album was as over the top as it intended to be. I don't see anything on here blowing people away to the point were they'll be flocking to James like a cult. The grooves and hooks aren't nearly as pronounced or strong as they were on his debut album "Welcome". If you want to start a cult, you really need to blow peoples minds and then replace said mind with your own influences and ideas.

All this album does is set up some synth oriented rhythms, add some goofiness, some fake soul and Ian Curtis vocals. James Pants is still clearly making music he wants and having a good time doing it, but I feel as though his dark fantasy world needed to be fleshed out a bit more. Ridiculous is just ridiculous without the strong hooks backing it up.

Sounds like a mix of Gary Wilson, Prince, Baron Zen, Chromeo, Joy Division and Jamie Lidell.

2.5/5

  • You were pretty much reiterating your point the review could've just been 3 minutes. I liked a select few songs on this album. It's a solid alum.. I feel that listening to welcome, everybody wanted a welcome pt. 2 but James Pants is forever evolving with his influences and his style. If you listen to New Tropical it's heavily influenced by Diplo.. But yeah I think i'd give it a 3.5 out of 5

  • Welcome was Great. - This was AMAZING. (because of its uniqueness)

But people seem to forget about his Ice Castles album. It was kind of like this & Welcome met in the middle kind of but it was like...completely instrumental. It was reeeeaaaallllyyyy good.

  • I live in Spokane and everybody always says the whole city is 10 years behind in music, and also its like, the worst place to make electronic music, I guess thats why I'm studying to become an electronic producer myself, you should do a review on my album when it comes out.

  • Great review, thank you for your honest feedback on the album!

  • good review.. i feel u 100%

  • you are such a boring turd, its unfortunate you don't understand the vibe and inspiration for this album, your irrelevant critique of this album is easily ignored. oh, and its pronounced "self-deprecating" not " self depreciating". go do something constructive with your life.
