More than 500 million people in Africa have no access to electricity. The Freeplay Foundation provides wind-up and solar-powered lights to the poorest of the poor -- orphaned children in Rwanda. Meet the children that require a light in their lives.

Academy Award-winning actor Tom Hanks and the Lemelson Foundation funded Freeplay Foundation's development of the Lifelights, which aims to provide clean, safe light to the poorest and most vulnerable in Africa.

  • If my small contribution can light up just one of the lives of the people featured in your video, I will die a happy man. I thank you and pray that the light emanating from you and your foundation shines on us all and that you reach the hearts and minds of those ready to care.

  • Thanks to your relentless efforts in highlighting their plight - the FUTURE of youth in rural areas can be changed by this simple light. May you get all the donations you need to continue making a difference.

  • I never thought about African children and orphans after dark before. This is a great effort to inform and sensitize the public. If Tom Hanks supports them so can I!

  • No wonder Tom Hanks is such a supporter of these folks. The work they do is amazing and deserves all of our support
