The Neanderthals lived on this planet for 250,000 years; according to fossil evidence.
All life on earth, from DNA to the eye of an eagle, evolved through genetic adaptive change. If a particular trait allowed the organism to survive and procreate, it's genes were passed down to the next generation. Just as penguins could once fly and have now lost that ability do to continental drift and isolation, so too were humans different than they are today and thus changed over great periods of time.
