The Webb Space Telescope's giant primary mirror, arguably its most critical and difficult part, is approaching completion. The 18-segment mirror stands two stories high and is designed to best capture the infrared light Webb seeks. Follow the mirror's journey from rough ore to precisely reflective, gold-coated segments in this video, which details how the mirrors are constructed and tested.

  • Oh man this is so fucking exciting. This is the next big step in Astronomy.

  • I just hope they don't cancel it downright; it's already facing cancellation by the Congress. Why can't they cut down on war costs and save some money for the whole humankind?

  • @L0CH4N4 Because the American govermnet is a bunch of warmongering assholes, killing for oil/profit and supremecy over other countries. Spending money on such project isin't profitable. Well in forms of money...

  • Those mirrors used to be Chuck Norris' but they weren't good enough for him, so NASA got them : )

  • Boo-YEAH!!! Chuck Norris built this with his mind!

  • @L0CH4N4 Congress has MUCH better things to spend tax payers money on. you know, things like welfare for those who don't need it, bailouts for banks etc. I think that it's naive to limit humans to thinking we're all that's in this vast universe, but it's not their call to say that, theyre just scared it may not be true.

  • @L0CH4N4 your answer lies in mankind's stupidity..

  • I can't wait to see what this bad boy can do! I'd like to see a more detailed explanation of the technology and procedures involved in building the Webb. It should get its own episode of "How It's Made" or something.

  • where did you stop in new jersey? : )
