A passage from the film I Don't Just Want You to Love Me aka Ich will nicht nur, daß ihr mich liebt - Der Filmemacher Rainer Werner Fassbinder(1993) directed by Hans Günther Pflaum. In this passage Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film Fontane - Effi Briest (1974) is analyzed.
To me Fassbinder was/is Germany's (and one of Europe's) greatest film maker after WWII. What he did with his films for the people of post World War II Germany with regards to laying bare the very sinews, the pain and frustration in individuals and in society is of the highest order. It is a shame that his masterpieces are rarely if ever shown on (German) television nowadays!
