Henry Cowell: "Irish Suite" (1929) This is an arrangement by Cowell of three of his "string piano" pieces as a concerto. The Irish Suite includes "The Banshee", "The Leprechaun" and "The Fairy Bells". Only the first two are heard here.
It is interesting how Cowell can go from works of heart-wrenching beauty to those that positively assail the ears and then back to phenomenal beauty again within the course of only a few pieces. While the concept he employs here is quite groundbreaking, I must say I find this particular piece to be unpalatably piercing.
The banshee is not a family ghost- she is a woman fairy (bean being woman and si being fairy) who sits wailing and combing her hair at the time of death and a lepechaun is not a gnome cobbler.
I'm from czeck republic and this is really surprising for me.Cowell is not much known here.1929 like Martinu's Paris period?I wonder what he'd sad hearing this.
