The legendary Shakespeare & Company book store in Paris, France has played host to two towering generations of anglophone writers in the city of lights. Sylvia Beach founded the original S&C in 1919, becoming an essential hub of the Lost Generation of Hemingway, Joyce, Stein, etc.
Sylvia Beach had James Joyce's manuscripts for "Ulysses" published in France where the printers couldn't read English.(It had been refused publication in England due to its "scandalous " content.
I just met Sylvia Whitman in Paris 2 weeks ago. She was charming and ethereal and was devotedly unpacking a stack of antique books on the footpath outside Shakespeare and Company! Great girl!
