The legendary Shakespeare & Company book store in Paris, France has played host to two towering generations of anglophone writers in the city of lights. Sylvia Beach founded the original S&C in 1919, becoming an essential hub of the Lost Generation of Hemingway, Joyce, Stein, etc.

  • Sylvia Beach had James Joyce's manuscripts for "Ulysses" published in France where the printers couldn't read English.(It had been refused publication in England due to its "scandalous " content.

    I just met Sylvia Whitman in Paris 2 weeks ago. She was charming and ethereal and was devotedly unpacking a stack of antique books on the footpath outside Shakespeare and Company! Great girl!
