LTTE massacre innocent civilians in Thanamalwila 2008.01
Attack targets Sri Lanka civilians
At least 24 people have been killed by suspected fighters belong to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), or the Tamil Tigers, in southern Sri Lanka, according to the country's military.
The attack occurred on Thursday, two days after 27 people were killed in a bus ambush in a nearby town.
Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, a military spokesman, said on Friday: "A group of LTTE cadres ... killed a total of nine civilians in Hampegamuwa, near Thanamalwila, on Thursday night."
He also said that a search operation was under way to hunt down fighters in the area.
The LTTE, which is based in the island nation's north and east, was not immediately available for comment on the alleged attack.
