Despite popular belief chameleons don't change colour to the extent shown on cartoons.
Chameleons are already camouflaged to their environment, heir colour changing ability is to show emotion and for displaying during mating season.
As demonstrated here, the chameleon is dark and spotted black, this is due to stress caused by being picked up, and she begins to calm her marking get lighter.
This chameleon is a Yemen/Veiled chameleon and that is almost the full extent of her colour changing abilities:
shes green, she can get a brighter green (sometimes with blue bits) or she can get darker with black bits, or go a really pale green with white spots, all due to emotion not camouflage!
