CATERINA VALENTE (born January 14, 1931) is an Italian-born singer, dancer, and actress. She comes from an Italian artist family ; her father Giuseppe was a well-known accordion player, her mother, Maria Valente, a musical clown. She has three siblings, of whom Silvio Francesco was also active in show business, they often teamed up together, both on stage and on records.
Life and career:
In 1952 Caterina married juggler Erik van Aro (Gerd Eric Horst Scholz). He recognized her talent and accompanied her in her initial years of worldwide success, although they later divorced. In 1953, she made her first recordings with famous orchestras such as Kurt Edelhagen and Werner Müller. In the mid-Fifties she achieved great success in Europe (and not much later worldwide) with wonderful songs like "The Breeze and I", "Spiel Noch Einmal Für Mich, Habanero", "Dich werd' Ich Nie Vergessen" and "Casanova" to name just a few. She appeared in several movies (musicals) and in 1955 she was featured on the "Colgate Comedy Hour" with Gordon MacRae. Between 1966 and 1972 she was a frequent guest on the Dean Martin Show, and also the Perry Como Show. In 1972, she married the British pianist Roy Budd; they had a son, Alexander, but they divorced in 1979.
Over the years, she has recorded and performed with many international stars, including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Dean Martin, Danny Kaye, Benny Goodman, Edmundo Ros, Woody Herman, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Buddy Rich, Sy Oliver, and Chet Baker.
In 2001, she released a new album Girltalk with harpist Catherine Michel. She is also the mother of singer Eric van Aro, Jr.
Valente is a true polyglot, having sung and recorded in no less than twelve different languages. After her first musical successes, she performed in fifteen films. Apart from that she plays the guitar like no one does. Like Rosemary Clooney, Caterina Valente is a true artist at heart!
This video dates from Sept. 18, 1965. Here Bing & Caterina sing a medley of songs from the 1958 CROSBY-CLOONEY album "FANCY MEETING YOU HERE.". This was the first episode of "The Hollywood Palace" that was broadcast in color.
