Bristol Tour of Tax Dodgers

Flying picket in Bristol of National and Multinational chains which dodge their taxes at a time when massive cuts are being made to UK government spending and services.

Vodafone was let off a £6 billion tax bill by HMRC (yes, 6 billion, 6 000 000 000), in a "sweetheart" deal. Meanwhile the Indian government forced the same company to pay every penny of the £1.1 billion they owed them.

Phillip green, the Owner of the Arcadia group (which owns Topshop, BHS, Dorothy Perkins and others) last year received a £1.2 BILLION bonus. However, he registered the company he owns in the name of his wife, who lives in Monaco - so he didn't pay a single penny of tax on it. It is estimated he should owe the exchequer £285 million. Arcadia is also based in the Cayman islands, for tax purposes - so itself manages to avoid paying taxes. To rub salt into the wound, Phillip Green has also been appointed as an advisor to the government on the cuts, cuts which wouldn't be necessary if people like him paid their taxes like everyone else.

Boots was taken over by an American holding company. Shortly after, the long-established British company moved its headquarters to a post office box in Switzerland, so that it can avoid paying UK taxes. Consequently, its tax bill fell from £100million to just £3 million - about 3% of its profits (less than rate of income tax a person on minimum wage pays!).

TAKE ACTION!

We can only do so much. We need to put pressure on these companies to stop avoiding taxes, and also put pressure on the government to close the loopholes and force these companies and individuals to pay tax like the rest of us.
