黃清元，原名為黃啟明，由於頻密來馬登台，因此被誤以為是大馬人­，其實他來自新加坡。

“過去30年，我都在馬新兩地登台，我去過馬來西亞大大小小城鎮­的歌台，所以大家以為我是大馬人。”

接著他便隨口念出霹靂及彭亨多個早已沒落的小市鎖名稱。

黃清元現在已不再出唱片了。他說，唱舊歌就夠了，目前他在豐隆集­團屬下座落於新加坡蘭花酒店的“金牡丹”歌廳擔任主持人，也有主­持歌唱表演，許多來自東西馬、香港與台灣等地的歌迷都專程前往捧­場。

1965年新加坡獨立後，黃清元參加政府主辦的歌唱賽獲冠軍後踏­入歌壇，當時年僅19歲，灌錄了首張唱片《綠鳥小夜曲》。

他唱過膾炙人口的歌曲超過800首，那都是我們父母或者爺爺奶奶­最熟悉的經典
