On 15th October 2008, Rural Women's Day, Mozambican women farmers, marching to demand their rights to land, received support from one of the country's most prominent citizens, former first lady Graca Michel.
The wife of ex-South African president Nelson Mandela, greeted around 800 female farmers marching through the capital city Maputo.
Carrying banners and singing freedom songs in their native Shaangan language, the women danced and marched for about 4.5 km before meeting Ms. Machel, Virgilia Matabele, Minister for Women and Social Development and the Minister for Industry and Commerce, Antonio Fernando.
After speaking passionately about their challenges, the women then handed over a charter of their demands to the government.
