Dont u roots get matted if u dont retwist/maintain it for so long? How do u prevent the root of the locs from matting together between retwist?

I wish I could do this style exactly, but will have to modify it. I've had my locs for almost 5 years but my hair is just naturally layered and it's sorta annoying because bun styles always have to be modified. Grr...
