LINUX HOWTO 1st installment (Errata: see below)
This is the first in a new series called Linux HOWTOS. Every week I will post a video explaining how to accomplish something using a GNU/Linux operating system. Please write requests for installments in the comments!
This installment deals with using ndiswrapper to use Windows wireless drivers in Linux. Hardware manufacturers often don't release specifications of their products to the open source community, so programs like ndiswrapper become necessary.
If you have any questions, please ask in the comment field, and I or someone else will do our best to answer. Please avoid 'RTFM'-style answers. They are not welcome. Also please post corrections if I mistakenly give some wrong information.
I hope this project will serve as a valuable resource for people wanting to make the switch from a proprietary operating system to Linux.
***Errata*** If you are using ndiswrapper but have a native kernel module for your wireless card installed, you need to add the line: blacklist name_of_kernel_module to you blacklist file (probably /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist ). Running "ndiswrapper -l" (without quotes) as root will give the name of the native linux module you need to blacklist. If the module is already loaded you need to run "rmmod name_of_module" (without quotes) before ndiswrapper will work. ******

I'm sure glad I found your video. Out of the versions of Linux I like Suse much better for its ease of use. But I searched their site and with the information I got from there including what I already had, I would have never gotten anything done. I was trying to use the default ndiswrapper included with the versions of Linux that came with them chasing my tail all the way. I'm also sure the non open source driver thing is has to do with Gates and MONEY! Great video and thanks a mil for posting.
ridiculous, too complicated for something uncomplicated, just install Ubuntu v9.04, autodetects wireless card right out the box, make Linux better with "open drivers" :)
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. It helped a lot. Works on Ubuntu 9.1 server. I just needed to install the developer tools (essentials ) and unzip to make it through the tutorial.
LOL i bet if linux was commercial it would be even more popular than the mac and FYI i just installed opensuse11.1 on my pc and it detected my network adapter found the SSID and connected to it gee that only took 30 mins. w/o ndiswrapper lol im even younger than you and i can configure wifi in linux and another thing I DIDN'T USE THE CLI

Open the software centre, search for ndiswrapper and mark for installation, done... No need to compile from source.
This video is no good for newbies, because it relies completely on shell commands. All of this is not necessary...
