This morning, a hawk thumped against our front window. I took it round to our back door and let it recover away from our cats and dogs.
I took this short video before it flew off after having recuperated for an hour or so...but, is it a Kestrel or a Sparrowhawk? Looking at the pages on the web, my money's on a Sparrowhawk...can anyone confirm?

  • It's a sparrowhawk. I've had lots of them in my back due to keeping pigeons. But I wouldn't have gone near it with my bare hands. It could have taken off a few fingers.

  • Yes, Thanks for that, I realised in hindsight that my fingers were at risk! In future, if it happens again, I'll wear gloves. Bri.

  • I got a better look at the chest for a second its a sparrow hawk. Kestrels are smaller and have more color. Also they like most falcons have a white face with black lines that sometimes resembles a helmet.

  • Many thanks for your comments....

  • What happend with this spar??

  • I'm not sure what happened to it, I never saw it again. brian.

  • thats so cool that you had the opportunity to get so close to it! :O

    Just so funny - 0:46

  • I love the comments, "could have taken a few fingers." Yes, that is a Uuropean Sparrow Hawk, but a true accipiter, a Kestrel is a falcon. People, the internet is there to educate as well. Bu the looks of it, if it crashed into something, it is probably done, internal or neuro damage. Best left to be eatten by a stronger Spar that didnt crash into a wall, kill that gene line then and there lol

  • GOSHAWK?!!??! are you lot mad, it's a female Sparrowhawk !! the falconers that said it was a gos I think you have a bit more to learn

  • heah i think its a sparrowhawk

  • cool man i have seen a few of these birds not as up close as this but , think i seen 1 flying off sith some grass or moss in its beak , think it could be making a nest close to this place , think i might go and have a look i would love to find a nest just to wach these quality birds because there are quite hard to spot compared to buzzards or kestrals there al loads of them around lanarkshire area

  • hahahaha taken off a few fingers. worst that would have happen was it would have footed you an grb hold tight :)

  • @cubagold no dipstick it isnt, its a sparrowhawk , like a miniature gos. You have a lot to learn.

  • It's a Sparrowhawk. Not negotiable. Glad it flew off OK
