The Finding of St Anthony

The works of art included here are inspired by the story of the desert hermit Saint Anthony (ca.250-350), whose commentaries on the dual nature of man shadow light, male female, saint and demon, vividly illustrated in paintings and drawings by Sassetta, Martin Schongauer, Hieronymus Bosch, Joachim Patinir (Jerome), Niklaus Manuel, David Teniers, Félicien Rops and Henri Fantin Latour (included in this video, with thanks to Wikimedia).

The "place he found for himself" is represented here by The Garden of Eden as illustrated in the Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry
The accompanying text, written by Claude Louis Combet for the film "Les Tribulations de Saint Antoine", is sung from the point of view of the saint.

What blasphemy and to lie by portraying it as the writing of Saint Anthony, reminds us all of the time when Arius and those following his false doctrines used the name of Saint Anthony to back their claim to lower God as man. Thankfully Saint Anthony left the desert for a few days, came into town and publicly renounced Arius and helped us keep the Church pure of false teachers who also tried to claim his name. LORD Have Mercy on your soul that you may find The Light of Christ.

Those who see this as blasphemy have simply not understood this piece. The poem stands as it is. Whatever Anthony himself thought or wrote can only be guessed, but the poem itself is a fascinating view of the human being realising that all is not necessarily as he first imagined it. If you are worried about blasphemy then I suggest you cut yourself off from the world entirely, since "blasphemy" (as you see it) is all around and you will only find peace in your own tiny cave.

You don't get it of course. That painting was part of a painting depicting the visions of St Anthony., as described in his writings. If the saint's visions were blasphemous, I cannot help that. The whole point was that he felt the whole of nature and in particular the distinction between man and woman to be something more fluid that common thinking held.

The whole point of this is to show that in David Teniers' saint anthony and saint jerome in the desert painting, there could have been a hidden meaning of the duality that MAYBE-oh MAYBE, Jesus WAS married to Mary Magdalene and he could have had an heir. That's why we see the prominence of female figures! After all, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were written 20, 30, 40, and 50 years respectively AFTER the death of Christ! MAYBE someone FORGOT to write something or CHOSE to leave that out?
