On Monday 18 April 2011 we had the official celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Van Abbemuseum, exactly 75 years after the opening of the museum in 1936. Together with our most valued supporters, we reflected on how the museum has developed since its inception and looked forward to its future. After opening speeches by Rob van Gijzel, Mayor of Eindhoven, and Charles Esche, Director Van Abbemuseum, we were honoured to welcome two special guests that evening: Nicholas Serota, Director of Tate, and Joost Zwagerman, a Dutch writer, poet and essayist. In their lectures they each offered us their insights into the role of art and art museums in the world today.
Nicholas Serota (1946) was appointed Director of the Tate in 1988. An art historian and curator, he was previously Director of the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford and the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Under his Directorship Tate has seen a dramatic period of expansion. Tate St Ives was opened in 1993, followed by Tate Modern in 2000 and the redevelopment and re-launch of the original Millbank gallery as Tate Britain.
Modern art is the salon art of our day. The opposition to it is growing. Here are some of the main complaints: 1. Cold 2. Disjointed 3. Can't communicate it's message 4.Weird 5.Elitist 6. Technically poor if there is technique at all 7. Pompous and inflated, often takes up a room 8. Non functional, not useful, not integrated into life 9 No breath or scope.

"Taint Modern - if the Tate Art Museum was really interested in new art, they'd talk about the backlash against the old art that is going on now.

Sir Nicholas Serota says that his approach is under attack and there must be resistance to this attack. He also stresses the importance of working with artists and giving them a platform for their voice. This ideal does not seem t o be sustained however when it is artists who are attacking his approach.
