First of all, YEAH!!!... the latest GH3 update over Xbox Live has added manual and separate audio/video calibration! That means nobody will ever say "why do the notes hit so late, this is fake" anymore! Well, it'll cut down on some of that, anyway. I've got my audio at 145ms and video at 35ms (random small number I chose, seems to work out well with my TV). And it's awesome. I'm trilled that my notes "burst into flames" on the row of circles instead of off-screen AND I can still play in time with what I hear, not what I see. Very cool Neversoft! Much appreciated.
So, now, my first FC video. I've been working up to getting 20 songs gold-starred (for the Enlightened Guitarist achievement) and this is the 19th. One more to go!
I was soooo tempted to start looking around the room, or at the camera or something, to be goofy during the final section where it's all the same 3 notes over and over again, but I didn't want to risk screwing up my FC for that. :-D
BTW, I accidentally used a brighter exposure in this video which washes out the notes on screen. If anybody cares, let me know which way you like it: this way, or the less-washed-out-but-darker way of some of my other recent videos.
Thanks everyone for the great feedback. Thanks for watching.
FAQ:
----
Q: How does it work?
A: Everything is explained in detail here: http://egyokeo.com/midihero
Q: How do you do 3-note chords?
A: All "two adjacent note" power chords are mapped to the top 4 pads, so with two hands I can play any 3-note chord except GYO.
Q: How do you do whammy and star power?
A: I use a bass drum pedal on my right foot to activate star power, and a hi-hat pedal on my left foot to control whammy depth.
Q: How do you hold notes?
A: My MIDI Hero software has an auto-hold feature for every note hit because it's more natural for a drummer to play that way. It's not a good feeling to mash sticks into drum pads to hold notes.
Q: How much does this cost?
A: The drumKat is a pro-quality MIDI drum pad set. These days, they run about $1k. I also use a PC to run my custom home-brew MIDI Hero software to interpret the drum events. Then the "XIM" and "XFPS" add another $100+. This is not made for the masses. This is a one-of-a-kind setup.
Q: Do you play real drums? Are you in a band?
A: Yes, I've been playing drums since 1986. I have been in various bands from Jazz to Ska over the years. I'm not so interested in it anymore. Guitar Hero uses just the right brain cells that make playing an instrument fun. Schlepping equipment from smokey bar to smokey bar isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Q: Are you getting Rock Band?
A: Yes, but probably not until January 31, 2008, when the drum peripheral goes on sale separately. I already have two GH2 guitars, I don't want the RB one or a microphone. People have figured out how to attach your own bass drum pedal so that's good. Maybe by then I'll have found a way to use my own MIDI triggers, even if I still have to buy the drum peripheral to wire into.
