Ahh yeah i would have thought it would be mentioned - I know he's put in more than 1 guitar on other recordings even if it's playing the same thing just to boost the sound - this song so reminds me of where i grew up, seaside city, fairground overlooking the sea, it's still there now and you still get that old vibe when you're there.

i think you're correct when you say he's done 2 guitars. a quote from leave home cd liner notes: "oh oh i love her so was inspired by freddy cannon and visions of palisades park. joey loved the farfisa organ, though the ramones never used it in the song." i think if any type keyboard was used, it would have been mentioned.
-
Yeah, i thought that was a keyboard at first but it cuts out at a really odd place, then i remembered a band i played bass for which had 2 guitarists and occasionally when they both played the same parts you would here this ringing sound similar to the one in the song. So i think he's done 2 guitars, 1 playing right through and the other used to emphasize certain parts like the beginning of bars, chorus etc. The same thing happened when i did mine.

didn't know about the tambourine until you mentioned it! i just didn't notice it before.. when i listened again (knowing what to listen for), i heard it. i also could hear some type of keyboards imo, in the section immediately following the first chorus, say :52 to :58. oh, and yeah, johnny's downstroking technique sounds awesome, especially on these early tunes!

hi colonel, i stand corrected... i went back to the original, and sure enough, there were cymbals at the end. my mistake..

There's also a tamborine all the way through like 'judy is a punk'. I love Johnny's unique downstroke style in these old songs. 'we're a happy family' among others is similar in that he plays one full downstroke then one part downstroke repeated over and over, it's a rhythm thing, almost a flicking of the wrist, something i've been trying to copy for years. I just love the sound it produces.

Thanks Gerry, you're right about the vocals, the more you apply the effect, the more music you cut out but at a cost of losing some vocals. I could apply less effect and have clearer vocals but the original music would get through and things would start to sound messy. The cymbals are there at the end, i think it's 1 hit every 2 bars and for the last 8 bars it's 1 hit every bar 'til the end but i do miss things now again no matter how much i listen.

excellent effort colonel! your instrumental tracks are right on the mark, sounding very much like the original song! 5* a couple observations.. in this cover, joey's vocal seems less full compared to the original, because in the orig. his vocal was doubled (i think) during the choruses. when instruments removed, the double voc. effect is lost, and backing voc. harmonies are very faint. also, in orig., don't think cymbals were used at very end. your addition of cymbals was a nice touch..
You know, I tried this kind of effect on Pinnacle where you can remove the vocals and only have the guitar and drums playing. Only seems to work more effective on the 90s albums though.

Yeah some songs it works well on but some don't work at all - Depends how the original song was mixed i think - The 'Leave Home' album is really good for isolating the vocals - Haven't tried with any of the 90s albums though.
