China's Involvement in Iran Nuclear Crisis

Israeli expert analyses China's involvement in the Iranian nuclear crisis

Last week, Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that Iran now has 3,000 centrifuges for enriching uranium, an announcement that once again put the Iranian nuclear issue back in world media headlines. The U.S. and many other Western nations are threatening economic sanctions to pressure Iran to stop its nuclear program. But despite this, there are two big nations that want to take a more lenient approach. Our Israeli team has more.

Although the UN Security Council ordered Iran to suspend its uranium enrichment activity, Iran still has important political allies. These allies are opposing the international community's call for sanctions.

Professor Barry Rubin from the Global Research of International Affairs Center in Israel says that it's Russia and China that are supporting Iran the most.

[Professor Barry Rubin, Director, GLORIA Center]:
"What has happened in the last month or two, the big change, is that the western European countries are more ready to do more in terms of sanctions and pressure, so the two countries who are holding it up in the U.N Security Council are China and Russia".

Professor Rubin stresses that Russia is Iran's main ally and protector, but also explains China's involvement in the crisis. He says China supports Iran mainly to protect its own political interests.

"The Chinese are always worried about how a situation might affect them in the future. This is exactly what happened by the way over Kosovo. They didn't care about Kosovo...they don't care so much about Iranian nuclear... They are worried that if sanctions go into effect against Iran today, that someday that might be used against China over Taiwan issue or over something."

Professor Rubin explains that oil plays a big part in China's trade relations with Iran.

"China is the second most dependent country in the world or the first most dependent country in the world in importing oil. And they are getting the oil from the Middle East, and they are building long pipelines, and they want to do business with Iran"


According to the NASDAQ website, U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said the U.S. believes China has increased trade with Iran in the last six months. And that, he says, is sending the wrong signal to Tehran about the international community's attitude toward its nuclear program.

This week, China closed a gas deal with Iran of 2.6 billion euros, ignoring the last week newly introduced US sanctions against Iran.

It made the US angry because we just ignored their sanctions against Iran, and the US is even more angry because the deal is in Euros instead of dollars. The US protested in China, without success. LOL
