After discussion on the Maynard Ferguson forum, I have decided to attempt to gain control of the "wig" high note embouchure. This embouchure, or varient of it has been used by Arturo Sandoval, Bud Brisbois, John Madrid and from his famous youtube stairwell video, Mr. Steve Reid.

This embouchure is created when the lower lip is rolled in or out, depending on the player. From this clip, you will see I have chosen the rolled out technique first.

The sound I get thus far stinks. It is not full and basically bad in all ways. The only thing so far is that very high notes can be generated easily. Let's see after some time of getting feel for this set up if I can make these notes useable outside of the house.

I am using an Asymetric mouthpiece paired with a ST-307 MF Horn.

  • I obviously know this sounds bad - but what trumpet player doesn't experiment with known techniques that some players have clearly mastered to great benefit?

  • What you want to show whit this?

  • Nothing beyond this being an attempt at gaining control over a very unconventional embouchure that some players use to achieve altissimo register.

    Nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks for the comment - have you tried it yet?

  • haha do you really thing that it 's a note or trumpet sound? go to practice. you cant play professional.

  • tea's ready!

  • @volodya2 "whit" is not a word. At least not how you're using it.

  • do you play dry or wet?

  • Not a bad try, but it's definitely worth going for the best sound you can and then working your range up from there. I don't think any of these notes were the best sound that you can play. Obviously, you know that, but this is two years ago. Have you gotten a good sound with this embouchure yet, or have you changed?

  • You are on the right track but the key here is embouchure strength and elasticity.

I am developing an embouchure metering system that will allow you to achieve this in about eight to twelve months.

It's the result of 6 years of embouchure research.

    Stay tuned...

  • oh yeah! I remember I used to use this embouchure in early high school. It totally jacked up my playing and it was more of a detriment to my playing as a developing musician. I had to break away from it because it sacrificed my tone and I couldn't use the embouchure for anything below like a high C. I don't regret leaving it behind since I got better afterward and I've had to improve my range and flexibility through hard work and practice :D

  • whats the difference between a normal embouchure and a wig embouchure

    ?

  • oe joshe
