Otsuka was taught under Funakoshi, went to his teachers, learnt the Pinans. Which have a chinese aspect to them. Then split with Wado Kai, after he died his son called himself a 10th dan, and made Wado Ryu. Shintani and one other are the only ones with 9th dan documentation to back it up.
Wado Kai is chinese and japanese together, though not many japanese like that.

hey um i studied wado kai and im a brown belt and brief history here. sensie otsuka first developed this martial art when he was a young boy living in japan and he was the first to become a tenth dan in this style of martial art. his first pupil was sensie shintani who grew up in alberta and he died in 2001 or something like that. but yeah thats basically it
