Dad and I return to the BWCA for our second trip, with a couple friends, entering the wilderness on the Minnesota side at Lake Isabella. We went in for 7 days and 6 nights. By the time we emerged from the wild, mother nature had given us the full gamut of weather including cold and hot extremes. We hooked and ate a variety of fish: walleye, northern pike and largemouth bass. Our largest northern was 30 inches which pales in comparison to the big one that got away. We saw a plethora of flora and fauna. In between the trees and among the moss and ferns we saw colorful wild flowers, giant mushrooms, deer and wood peckers. On the water, we paddled past loons, painted turtles, snapping turtles, bald eagles, a bear sized beaver but no moose. Of course the ubiquitous mosquitos and biting flies were unrelenting and there were giant blood sucking leaches underwater on the rocks, too! On the last evening we watched lightening flash the landscape as a severe thunder storm moved through just to the south. Visiting this rich and pristine wilderness is my idea of a good time. The experience is both rigorous and relaxing. I recommend anyone seeking adventure to visit the BWCA at least once in their life. If you don't have your own gear you can simply show up to Sawbill Canoe Outfitters and they will prepare you for the journey. You'll need to arrange for a permit and schedule a route with one of the offices of the Superior National Forest. They'll make you watch a video to inform you of a set of common sense rules to follow such as pack it in and pack it out--leave no trace. This video is a composite of clips I captured during our trip. The song is by LTJ Bukem.
