This satellite measures infrared radiation, which is heat. The tops of clouds are cooler and the highest clouds are the coldest. The temperature of the ground varies, too, and that's the daily "throbbing" you see as it heats up in the day and cools down at night. More discussion and analysis at http://egb13.net/
